Privacy at a glance

The important facts, first.

Three verified facts explain how the extension handles your WhatsApp content, processing and settings.

Your content stays local

No WhatsApp content, browsing history or extension telemetry is sent to the developer.

Blur runs in the page

Supported WhatsApp Web elements are changed visually inside your browser.

Only settings use storage

Preferences use Chrome storage; temporary lock state stays in local extension storage.

Extension data collection

Privacy Blur for WhatsApp Web is the website brand for the extension whose manifest name is “WhatsApp Web Privacy Blur — Hide Chats, Names & Media.” It is designed to operate without collecting or sending WhatsApp messages, contact or group names, profile photos, media files, phone numbers, chat metadata, browsing history, analytics events, tracking data, or extension telemetry to the developer.

In practical terms

The extension has no developer-operated content backend.

Local processing on supported pages

The extension runs content scripts on https://web.whatsapp.com/* and https://business.whatsapp.com/*. These scripts inspect page elements only as needed to apply visual blur, hover reveal, and local lock behaviour.

All visual changes happen within the browser page where the supported WhatsApp interface is open.

Chrome extension storage

The extension uses two Chrome-provided storage areas for different purposes:

chrome.storage.sync

Stores privacy preferences such as enabled protections, blur strength, appearance, and password-lock settings. If password lock is configured, the extension stores a locally generated SHA-256 password hash rather than the plain-text password.

chrome.storage.local

Stores the temporary locked/unlocked state on the current browser installation.

Depending on your Chrome account and sync settings, Google Chrome may sync values from chrome.storage.sync across browsers where you are signed in. This syncing is provided by Chrome, not by a server operated by the extension developer.

Chrome extension storage contains settings only; WhatsApp messages, photos, media and files are not written there.

Password Lock is a local visual gate

It does not encrypt WhatsApp chats, authenticate your WhatsApp account, replace device or account security, or prevent screenshots. The plain-text password is not stored.

Why each Chrome permission is requested

The current extension manifest requests storage and access to the two supported WhatsApp domains.

storage

Save your extension settings

Allows Privacy Blur to remember enabled protections, blur strength, appearance, and lock-related settings.

This permission does not itself provide access to WhatsApp messages.
Host access

Apply privacy controls on WhatsApp Web

Allows content scripts to run on web.whatsapp.com and business.whatsapp.com.

The host permission is limited to those declared domains.

The manifest does not request browsing-history, camera, microphone, location, cookies, or all-sites access.

Website hosting and connection data

The privacyblur.in website is hosted on Netlify. To deliver and secure the website, the hosting provider may process standard connection and security information, such as an IP address, browser user agent, request time, and requested URL.

This is website-delivery data handled under the hosting provider's practices. Visiting this website does not grant it access to your WhatsApp chats.

Support email and correspondence

When you email privacyblur.support@gmail.com, your email address, message, attachments, and normal email metadata are processed by your email provider and by Google/Gmail. The Privacy Blur developer/publisher receives the information you choose to include so the request can be answered or investigated.

Support correspondence may be retained as needed to respond, diagnose issues, and maintain appropriate support records. You may request deletion by emailing the same address, subject to legitimate security, record-keeping, or legal needs. Avoid sending private WhatsApp content unless it is necessary for your request.

External links

Links to the Chrome Web Store, WhatsApp, email services, or other third-party websites take you outside privacyblur.in. Those services may process standard service, connection, or account data according to their own terms and privacy policies. Privacy Blur does not control those third-party practices.

Analytics and third-party services

The current Privacy Blur extension and privacyblur.in website do not include developer-operated analytics, advertising, telemetry, or error-reporting SDKs. The extension also does not include payment services, authentication services, or external content-processing APIs.

Hosting, browser, email, Chrome Web Store, and WhatsApp providers may independently process standard service data under their own terms and privacy practices. Their processing is not developer-operated Privacy Blur analytics.

Privacy Blur does not currently offer Pro checkout or licensing on this website, and the website does not collect payment details. This policy will be updated before any paid service or payment provider is introduced.

Data retention and control

Extension data

Preferences remain in Chrome extension storage until they are changed, reset, removed by the browser, or affected by your Chrome sync and account settings.

Support correspondence

Emails and attachments may be kept as needed to answer the request, diagnose issues, maintain appropriate records, and meet legitimate security or legal needs. You may ask for deletion by contacting support.

Website connection and security data may be retained by the hosting provider according to its own practices and settings.

Policy updates

This policy may be updated if extension functionality, permissions, storage behaviour, or external-service usage changes. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will identify the current version of the policy.
